Sanya University (SU) was founded in 2005 in Sanya, Hainan province, with the former name of Sanya College. It was funded by a top 500 enterprise Geely Holding Group. It is the oldest and largest undergraduate college in Sanya and the fastest growing and most competitive comprehensive private university in China. In 2016, the People's Government of Hainan Province and the Sanya municipal people's government signed a contract to establish Sanya University on the basis of Sanya College.

With a total investment of three billion yuan ($469.2 million), SU covers an area of 3,000 mu (200 hectares) and a total building area of nearly 500,000 square meters. It has 16 secondary colleges and 68 undergraduate majors including nine disciplines such as economics, management, law, literature, education, art, engineering, science, and agriculture. It has modern teaching and living facilities, such as an academic exchange center, an art center, an experimental center, a computer center, a standard swimming pool, and a golf training ground. It also has two high-tech libraries with more than 2 million books.

SU has established speciality courses such as golf management and cruise management and services to develop international tourism in Hainan. It has also established training programs for hotel management, and the tourism and culture industries to cultivate high-quality and practical talents.

The university has established the first center for public diplomacy studies of private universities with the former minister of foreign affairs of China, Li Zhaoxing, as the honorary director, and established the Institute of State Governance Studies to exert the function of the university think tank and serve national and regional development. In 2016, the Ministry of Quality Promotion of Private Colleges and Universities was set up here. The university was elected as a member of the Association of Universities (Colleges) of Applied Science and has been selected into the Fifth National Education Reform and Innovation Model along with Fudan University and Beijing Normal University.

SU has established Hainan's first school of the fashion and health industry, and a health industry research institute with the National Development and Reform Commission International Cooperation Center. In 2016, Silk Road Business School was formally established. Sanya University became the initiator for global maritime silk road education. Additionally, it has set up a cross-border cooperation mechanism with ESSEC Business School, Niels Brock-Copenhagen Business College and International Islamic University.

The university was the only one in Hainan province rated as the typical experience of college graduates employment in 2015 and was named the typical experience of college graduates innovation and entrepreneurship in 2017. It also became a demonstration school of "Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform" in 2017 and won 73 national projects of innovative entrepreneurship education in the past two years. The university has been appraised excellent in employment among colleges and universities in Hainan for six consecutive years while possessing the top employment rate of graduates.

With its excellent social reputation, Sanya University has ranked second in China's comprehensive private universities for three years in a row and was named the top six-star private university in China on the 2018 list of Chinese universities released by the Chinese alumni network.
