West Island is home to a large amount of sergeant major fish, which are also known as five-banded damsel fish. Largely found in the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans, sergeant major fish can reach the exceptional length of 20 centimeters, but rarely exceed 15 cm. Their high and flat oval-shaped body, as well as their small mouths make them look cute. They also have five thick black or blue stripes on their bodies, as well as bright yellow backs.

Sergeant major fish are attracted to lagoons and reefs, as well as rocky coasts and harbors. They usually stay in mid-water, without going down more than 14-15 m of depth. Basically, they live together in groups, feeding on algae and plankton.

West Island is home to a large array of sergeant major fish in its waters. If tourists take a glass sightseeing boat, they will find that the fish like to trail after them. Tourists can also go diving, where they can admire and shuttle among the colorful coral of West Island.
