More than 108,000 flights took off or landed at Sanya Phoenix International Airport in 2020, transporting 15.41 million passengers and over 178,000 tons of cargo and mail, Hainan Daily reported on Jan 1.

According to reports, the airport's flights and passenger flow began to see positive growth on July 19, 2020 after the outbreak of COVID-19 at the beginning of the year. In August, the two figures increased by 10.8 percent and 4.1 percent respectively. On Oct 1, China's National Day, the airport's total passenger flow in 2020 exceeded 10 million.

In 2020, Sanya Phoenix International Airport achieved a historic breakthrough in flight growth, according to officials from the airport. The peak hour capacity was adjusted from 20 flights per hour to 25 flights per hour, and key progress was also made both in airspace optimization and in the separation of routes for in and out flights, they added.

Moreover, the airport is also striving to seize the opportunities created by the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port, redoubling efforts to deepen duty-free business cooperation, with a new duty-free shop opening at the airport on Dec 30, 2020.
