Sanya's yacht economy achieved trend-bucking growth last year with 139 newly-registered vessels, according to statistics from Sanya Maritime Safety Administration released on Jan 12.

This marks a 27.7 percent year-on-year increase, and means that the tropical city is now home to 641 yachts. The yacht property rights trading market in the jurisdiction of Sanya Maritime Safety Administration has witnessed growing dynamism, with 96 second-hand yacht ownership registrations seen throughout the year, up 81 percent year-on-year.

Sanya's beautiful natural environment and the favorable policies for the yacht industry in Hainan Free Trade Port have attracted foreign yacht-owners to base their vessels here. In 2020, the Sanya Maritime Safety Administration handled 43 transshipment registrations, an increase of 148.3 percent. In terms of the financing of the yacht industry, 16 yacht mortgage registrations totaling 57.45 million yuan ($8.9 million) were filed throughout the year, soaring by 4.33 times and 13 times respectively.

Now, the "luxury" connotations of yachts has faded away, and the "menu" of yacht tourism consumption is becoming available for common tourists. For instance, tourists can spend a modest amount of hundreds of yuan to go on a yacht ride.

In 2020, the Sanya Maritime Safety Administration initiated multiple service measures to help the development of the yacht industry, which include "Multi-license Integration" for passenger vessels in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) and "All-in-One Service" and "One Ship, One Code" for yachts.
