As a result of the improvements to Sanya's ecological environment in recent years, various migratory birds have flocked to the tropical city, enriching its biodiversity.

Wan Linfen, a ranger from the Sanya Wildlife Conversation Center, said that she spotted a purple heron at the wetland near Honglong Road in Haitang Bay on March 25. It is the first time that the wading bird of the heron family has been observed by the center in Sanya.

Purple herons like to live in swamps, ponds and places with abundant aquatic plants. Their shape is very recognizable, with brown and yellow plumage and black spots in the middle of the neck.

More than 20 coots were also recorded on March 4 in the same wetland in Haitang Bay, according to Wang Weihua, an official from the wildlife conservation center.

Wang said that as Sanya's environment has been continuously improved in recent years through the restoration of wetlands and ponds and migratory birds are finding more habitat in the city and more and more different species will come.
