Thousands of diving enthusiasts are set to enjoy a host of competitions and other events over the next few months, after the 2021 Hainan International Diving Festival kicked off with a special opening ceremony on Sanya's Wuzhizhou Island on April 11.

Featuring a short video competition, an underwater photography contest, a marine concert, a diving exhibition, and marine welfare activities, the festival aims to show off the beauty of the deep sea, enrich the tourist experience, and draw more attention to Hainan's diving resources.

Addressing the audience at the opening ceremony, Tan Ping, vice mayor of Sanya, said that the city's government will strive to promote the diving industry in all respects and partner with enterprises to boost marketing efforts. She said Sanya will polish its image as a diving destination, and promote the high-quality and high-standard development of its tourism sector, in order to attract more tourists to come and boost the island's economy.

The events will be open to divers on multiple social platforms, with 40 sub-venues in 20 Chinese cities like Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Kunming and Sanya providing a platform for communication between diving enthusiasts from around the world.
