Sanya proves popular with May Day travelers

Sanya welcomed 743,700 tourists during the May Day holiday, which lasted from May 1 to 5, a year-on-year increase of 196.9 percent. Total tourism consumption hit 2.07 billion yuan ($322 million), up 376.14 percent compared to the same period last year.

Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong province were the three biggest sources of the city's tourists.

Thanks to discounts and new activities offered at Sanya's scenic spots, the number of visitors increased dramatically during the holiday. According to Tencent LBS, the highest number of visitors in a single day exceeded 200,000.

And data from Ctrip reveals that the number of cars hired in Sanya during the holiday increased by 240 percent compared with the same period in 2019. In addition, the per capita consumption of tourists from outside Hainan between May 1 and 5 was around the same as during this year's Spring Festival.
