Sanya's health care system flourishes during past decade

During the past decade, the health care system in Sanya has flourished. The citizens are now benefiting from a reliable, secure, sustainable health care system that they feel comfortable and safe with.

On July 6, 2022, doctors of the Internal Medicine-Cardiovascular Department in Sanya Central Hospital & West China Sanya Hospital of Sichuan University successfully placed an ICD for an elderly patient with coronary heart disease, which saved his life. The insertion of the ICD was the first of such a piece of medical equipment in southern Hainan. 

Sanya Central Hospital & West China Sanya Hospital of Sichuan University were also included in the list of national regional medical center construction projects. In 2017, the Shanghai Children's Medical Center took full charge of Sanya Maternal and Child Health Hospital, which becomes the first Grade-A tertiary maternal and child health hospital in southern Hainan.

After the reconstruction and expansion of the outpatient complex building, Sanya Central Hospital was listed as the pilot hospital for establishing and improving a modern hospital management system by the National Health Commission. Sanya Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital was selected in the first batch of national traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) health tourism demonstration bases and the first batch of national TCM service export bases.

In recent years, more and more low-income families in Sanya are benefiting from the government's poverty alleviation project. As of 2021, a total of 13,093 low-income residents in all four districts of Sanya as well as the Yucai Ecological Zone signed up with family doctors. All 847 residents suffering from serious illnesses were cured, and 2,132 patients with chronic diseases were treated with standardized management measures. Through big data platform screening and dynamic monitoring, no residents went back to poverty caused by illness.  

On March 1, 2019, Health Sanya, the Sanya Municipal Health Commission's official WeChat information platform, went live. It connects with the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, various medical and health institutions at all levels in Sanya and other relevant administrative departments, including social security. As of 2020, the coverage of digital health records of permanent residents in Sanya reached 90.79 percent.

The number of participants in basic medical insurance has increased from 2019's 750,000 to this year's 800,000, covering 95 percent of Sanya residents. In August 2021, the National Healthcare Security Administration listed Sanya as the only pilot city of "special action for outpatient drug security" in Hainan province.
