China's first fully automatic nucleic acid and protein co-extraction platform has been operated at Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City. This breakthrough will significantly accelerate the industrial development of deep-sea microbial resources in Hainan.
Zhang Taoliang, a researcher at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Hainan Research Institute and Deep Life International Research Center, disclosed that manual nucleic acid and protein co-extraction procedures typically require a day and a half to process a single sample. In contrast, the automated platform can simultaneously handle two alternating 96-well plates, enabling the extraction of 192 samples within the same timeframe.
Compared to traditional manual methods, this innovation enhances sample processing throughput and efficiency by more than tenfold while substantially lowering experimental costs. It is particularly beneficial for extracting rare, low-biomass samples like deep-sea microbial specimens, improving experimental efficiency, shortening data generation cycles, and accelerating the development of diverse biological resources.
