Two new iconic European-brand yachts, intended for self-drive tours and eventual purchase in China's southernmost Hainan province, recently cleared customs under a zero-tariff policy at the Hainan Free Trade Port.

The owners of the vessels — an Italian Ferretti yacht and a French Lagoon power catamaran — took full advantage of the Hainan FTP's zero-tariff policy, saving over 27 million yuan ($3.96 million) in taxes, which significantly cut business operating costs.

These are the first yachts to clear customs under the policy since the launch of island-wide special customs operations in the Hainan FTP last December.

Sanya, located on a prime tourist position at 18°N, is a lush and tropical destination that enjoys over 300 days of good weather a year — making it perfect for sailing, boasting 264 kilometers of superb coastline to boot.

As a result, it's become a major hub for the domestic yacht industry and a testing ground for policy innovation.

The imported yachts will mainly be used for leisure tourism services in Sanya's waters, catering to both local and international tourists.

"To ensure these zero-tariff yachts cleared customs smoothly, we worked with the maritime, border inspection and transportation departments to provide full policy guidance and business support to companies, clearly outlining follow-up regulatory requirements," said Gan Jiayong, deputy director of Sanya Customs.

Looking ahead, Sanya Customs will continue to offer timely policy information services, enhance targeted guidance and encourage more businesses to understand and utilize relevant policies — strengthening regulatory support for Hainan FTP's development as a new high-level open area.
