Sanya airport expected to handle 3.63m summer passenger trips

As the peak summer travel season unfolds, Sanya's aviation market is experiencing a great surge in activity — driven by family vacations, leisure trips and students returning home.

To effectively cater to summer travel demand, Sanya Phoenix International Airport is enhancing its capacity layout and increasing the frequency of popular routes to boost its aviation support capabilities.

The airport is expected to handle about 22,800 flights, accommodating some 3.63 million passenger trips, according to the latest estimate.

In response to the summer travel trends and market dynamics, the airport is collaborating with 10 airlines — including Hainan Airlines, China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines — to increase flights from major cities like Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xiamen, Hangzhou and Xi'an.

This expansion is set to add 1,121 flights and support an additional 177,100 passenger trips, significantly enhancing its summer travel capacity.

The Sanya-Beijing Daxing route leads the expansion with 186 new flights, while the Shanghai and Xi'an routes have each added over 110 flights.

Additionally, Sanya Phoenix International Airport is optimizing its aircraft configurations by introducing more wide-body planes, improving passenger efficiency and capacity on key routes.

All in all, these efforts provide travelers with more flexible and convenient options.

An airport representative said they will continue to monitor summer travel patterns closely and adjust flight schedules and ground support as needed.

By refining the route network and improving the quality of services, and by shortening the check-in time for domestic flights to 40 minutes before departure, the airport aims to boost travel efficiency while ensuring safety.
