Yazhou district is located in Western Sanya, 45 kilometers from the city's downtown area and 28 km from its Sanya Phoenix International Airport.

The district has an area of 383.25 square km, with a coast line of 50.47 km. It contains 32 village clusters, 88 villages, and a population of 160,000 which includes 30,000 people of minority ethnicity, most of whom are Li.

Yazhou district is home to many key projects such as a creative industrial park, a central fishing port, the Nanshan freight port and the Nanshan cultural tourism zone, which is a vital center of Sanya's resources and energy as well as an important engine for the exploration of industries in Western Sanya.

In 2020, the district's GDP reached 6.82 billion yuan ($1.05 billion), increasing 4.1 percent year-on-year. The total revenue of the general public budget was 1.22 billion yuan, an 18.06 percent year-on-year growth. The per capita disposable income of its urban and rural permanent residents was 39,175 yuan and 19,156 yuan, increasing 3.7 percent and 7 percent year-on-year respectively.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, Yazhou district aims to form a high level open economy system, with a 10 percent growth in GDP. It also strives to have its urban and rural resident per capita disposable income, as well as its ecological environment protection be at the leading level in Sanya. Yazhou will also strive to improve its residents' livelihood, promote urban and rural civilization, bolster its social governance level, and build itself into an area with advanced science and technology, as well as advanced manufacturing, agriculture, culture, tourism, and education industries.
