Sanya's offshore duty-free shopping in first week of 2026 surges

On Jan 1-7 this year, the total value of offshore duty-free shopping across Hainan province reached 1.21 billion yuan ($173.27 million), with 824,000 items purchased by 149,000 shoppers — representing year-on-year increases of 88 percent, 30.3 percent, and 38.3 percent, respectively, according to the latest official figures.

In Sanya, offshore duty-free shopping at the city's four stores came in at 799 million yuan, with 503,100 items bought by 99,200 shoppers — showing year-on-year increases of 79.65 percent, 29.53 percent and 35.45 percent, respectively.
