Sales at the four duty-free shops in Sanya hit 201 million yuan ($29.3 million) on Feb 24, up 142 percent from last year, according to the Sanya Municipal Bureau of Commerce.
That performance marked the eighth consecutive day during the Spring Festival holiday that sales topped 200 million yuan. So far this month, total sales have reached 3.974 billion yuan, a 36 percent increase year-on-year, showing strong consumer demand.
The continued success of offshore duty-free shopping is being attributed to the optimal blend of supportive policies and a vibrant market.
This Spring Festival, Sanya rolled out duty-free shopping vouchers worth 30 million yuan, in a bid to target the right audience.
In addition, duty-free shops in the area teamed up to ensure popular items were well stocked and to introduce special Chinese New Year editions, making sure customers would fully enjoy the perks of the duty-free policy.
Sales numbers revealed that fashion items, jewelry, and beauty products consistently topped the charts, with electronics, groceries and imported beverages also experiencing steady growth. This is viewed as representing a more diverse consumer landscape and a dynamic market.
An official from the Sanya Municipal Bureau of Commerce said that as the Hainan Free Trade Port continues to develop, the benefits of the offshore duty-free policy are increasingly being felt.
Combined with joint promotions by the government and businesses and the creation of new cultural consumption experiences, Sanya's consumer market is widely said to be thriving.
Overall, the consumer boom during the Chinese New Year break has provided strong momentum to kickstart the year's economy.
Moving forwards, Sanya plans to build on the success of the festive season by continuing to improve its product offerings, enriching consumer experiences and driving high-quality growth in the retail market.
