Oct 16 marks World Food Day. Sanya, a tropical paradise in South China's Hainan province, is currently witnessing the joy of the autumn harvest.
Sanya is not only safeguarding its staple food production, but also diversifying its agricultural sector by promoting high-quality specialty crops, such as tropical fruits.
To ensure food security, Sanya has been implementing ecological and efficient crop rotation. With over 60,000 mu (4,000 hectares) of land devoted to this approach, the city has established numerous demonstration bases for seed cultivation, high-yield rice, and premium-quality rice, optimizing its agricultural practices.
Harnessing the power of agricultural technology, Sanya is helping farmers achieve better crop yields. Within its meticulously-maintained advanced cultivation fields, a range of intelligent devices, including weather sensors, soil sensors, water quality monitors, and video surveillance systems, work tirelessly around the clock. These devices provide real-time data on weather conditions, soil quality, water resources, and pest control.
As of September 2023, Sanya has cultivated over 11,690 mu of grain and oil crops, surpassing the targets it set by 4 percent.
