The Hainan Coconut Climbing Team for the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities arrived on Oct 21 in Sanya to conduct training for the local coconut climbing competition.
Hand-picking coconuts by climbing trees is a traditional labor practice among various ethnic groups in Hainan, evolving into the popular coconut climbing tournament.
The sport combines fun, entertainment and athleticism – embodying the distinct regional characteristics of Hainan.
In 2010, coconut climbing was included as a competitive event in the 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities.
According to Wu Dongdong, head of the Hainan Coconut Climbing Team, the competition includes two categories – a men's coconut climbing event involving a climb of 9 meters and a women's event of 7m.
"Our team's greatest strengths are our youth and determination," said Li Qingping, coach of the Hainan Coconut Climbing Team, which comprises six members with the oldest being 31 and the youngest only 14.
With about one month remaining until the games, the athletes are in the final sprint of their preparations. Li expressed confidence the team would be ready to compete at their best during the event.
