The "Academician village head" project and the winter melon and vegetable sowing ceremony were recently held at the Batou Base, Chengxi village, Yazhou district. The launch of this project signifies robust technological support for quality enhancement and increased yields in Yazhou's cowpea industry.
The residents of Chengxi village primarily depend on agriculture for their livelihood; however, the village's collective economy has significant potential for enhancement. Earlier this year, Shen Qirong, an esteemed academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was appointed as the "Academician village head" of Chengxi village.
Led by Shen, the project has established over 50 mu (3.33 hectares) of demonstration fields in Batou Base. Demonstrations showcasing the effectiveness of organic fertilizers have instilled confidence in farmers, with plans to expand their use district-wide next year.
Yazhou, the largest winter melon and vegetable distribution hub in southern Hainan and a vital national "vegetable basket", "fruit plate" and Nanfan breeding base, cultivates over 60,000 mu of winter melons and vegetables annually.
Ahead of winter melon sowing, Yazhou has implemented green manure planting strategies to improve soil fertility, supporting the cultivation of 62,000 mu of winter melons and vegetables this year. The "Academician village head" teams will provide tailored technical support to farmers, ensuring a harvest by the end of December.
