The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has announced that the Sanya Tourism Board has become the first official city tourism marketing organization from the Chinese mainland to join the body.
Founded in 2007, the GSTC was initiated by the United Nations Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Rainforest Alliance and the World Tourism Organization.
It establishes and manages global standards for sustainable travel and tourism — known as GSTC Standards — aiming to enhance the understanding and adoption of sustainable tourism practices worldwide.
On March 27, the United Nations Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Zero Waste announced that Sanya had been selected as one of the 20 Cities Towards Zero Waste globally.
This recognition not only serves as an international "green badge" — but also signifies solid step forwards for Sanya's tourism industry in terms of its internationalization, standardization and sustainable development, according to the advisory board.
From being a member of the GSTC to becoming a global example of a zero-waste city, Sanya is embracing high-quality development through sustainable tourism.
The city aims to create a wonderful place where living, working, and visiting are all enjoyable — allowing both residents and tourists to benefit.
Overall, Sanya is said to be dedicated to making tourism a source of happiness that everyone can enjoy — and this is the invitation it extends to the world.
