Profile of Tianya district

Tianya district was established on Jan 2, 2015. Located in central and western Sanya, the jurisdiction area of Tianya district is 939.8 square kilometers, accounting for 49 percent of the city's total area.


At the end of 2023, the permanent resident population of the district was 1.11 million – making it the second-biggest in terms of the permanent resident populations of all the cities, counties and districts in Hainan province.


The district is home to many landmarks like West Island and Tianya Haijiao, which is also known as the End of the Earth.

It also has new scenic spots like the "The Red Detachment of Women," a large-scale live performance with the local landscape as the backdrop, the Dream Water Paradise, the TUS Ice and Snow Paradise, as well as many other well-known resort areas.

The district's Sanya Phoenix International Airport ranks 18th in the country for annual passenger flow. Sanya International Cruise Home Port and its yacht harbor are also located in the district.

Tianya district is immersed in diversified tourist cultures. For example, West Island "Women Militia Culture" was highly praised by the late chairman Mao Zedong, "Tianya Culture" is recognized as Sanya's landmark culture, and "Culture of Danjia Fishing Village" describes Sanya's rise from a fishing village to a tourist city.

Currently, Tianya district is gearing up to become an overall well-off society that is active in a key phase of economic transformation, as well as a period of prominent opportunities and challenges. It will continue to tackle difficulties and make more achievements in those key projects to effectively facilitate Sanya's positioning as a world class coastal city.


In the first half of 2024, Tianya generated a GDP of 15.28 billion yuan ($2.1 billion), accounting for 30.9 percent of Sanya's total and representing 9 percent year-on-year growth.

During the six months, the industrial added value in the district reached 1.68 billion yuan, soaring 223.6 percent on the previous corresponding period.

The total output value of industrial enterprises above the designated size – those with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or more – amounted to 6.3 billion yuan, increasing by a massive 310.6 percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the average disposable income per capita for residents in Tianya stood at 21,435 yuan, reflecting a 4.4 percent year-on-year increase. Urban residents had an average disposable income of 24,598 yuan, showing a 3.6 percent growth, while rural residents saw their average disposable income rise to 13,391 yuan, a significant 8.3 percent increase.
