Haitang district is located in eastern Sanya, 28 kilometers from the downtown area and 45 km from Sanya Phoenix International Airport. It is named after the nearby Haitang Bay. In January 2015, Haitang district was officially established following the approval of the State Council.
Haitang district is categorized as a "national seacoast," a global leisure and resort area. It aims to build three national and international brands, such as a top-notch coastal hotel belt, a world-class yacht recreational community, as well as a national healthcare and fitness base.
Industry clusters relating to international art, international medical care, education and training, healthcare, as well as conferences and exhibitions are boosting improvement in the area.
Benefiting from various industrial projects, the district's industrial layout ranges from tourism to diversified tropical agriculture, covering internet services, healthcare, financial services, conferences and exhibitions, trade and logistics, low-carbon manufacturing, real estate, as well as high technology.
Due to the improved business environment in the district, nine of the city's and province's 12 major industries have gained rapid growth. They are coastal tourism, tropical agriculture, healthcare, modern financial services, conferences and exhibitions, modern trade and logistics, low-carbon manufacturing, real estate, as well as the high-tech related educational, cultural, and sports industry.
In the future, Haitang district will be built into a world-class tropical coastal resort, an international shopping base of Hainan, an exhibition and conference event center with Chinese characteristics, an important cultural creativity base, an international healthcare base, a regional financial center on Hainan island, a green headquarters base for Hainan International Tourism Island, as well as a demonstration area for urban and rural integration, innovative social development, and green growth.
From January to October 2024, Haitang district experienced a hefty surge of 18.7 percent year-on-year in fixed-asset investment growth across all sectors.
The total number of tourists received in the district reached 17.62 million during the same period, up 5 percent compared with the previous year. Among these visitors, 5.1 million were overnight guests, for 5.6 percent year-on-year growth.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), Haitang district will boost the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port. It will also strive to build an international tourism and consumption center, a world-class tropical coastal resort, an international shopping base of Hainan, an exhibition and conference event center with Chinese characteristics, an important cultural creativity base, an international healthcare base, a regional financial center on Hainan Island, a green headquarters base for Hainan International Tourism Island, as well as a demonstration area for urban and rural integration, innovative social development, and green growth.
